Selling a Rolls-Royce Cullinan Outright vs. Trading It In: How Exotic Auto Thinks About Both

Cullinan owners have two paths when the next car is already picked out. Trade the Cullinan into the Rolls-Royce dealer or the exotic store that is selling the new car, or sell the Cullinan outright and bring the cash to the next deal. Both can be the right answer. Which one works depends on the car, the state, and what the next deal looks like.

Here is how Exotic Auto thinks about it from Ewing, New Jersey, on a 2019 to current Cullinan, a Cullinan Black Badge, or a Cullinan Series II.

The outright sale number is almost always higher

A trade-in is a convenience trade. The dealer taking the Cullinan is pricing it to wholesale it or to sit on it for a month and retail it, with risk, floor cost, recon, and auction fees baked in. An outright buyer is pricing it to retail it directly. On a well-kept Cullinan with under 40,000 miles, the gap between an outright number and a trade number is usually in the tens of thousands and sometimes six figures on a Black Badge with the right spec.

Exotic Auto writes outright numbers only. The appraiser looks at the exact model year, Standard or Black Badge or Series II, color and interior, the Bespoke options sheet, miles, service history, Carfax, and what the car retails for in the current market, and returns one number with a pickup date in the driveway.

The trade-in tax credit is the one real argument for a trade

Most states give the buyer of a car a sales-tax credit on the value of the trade. In New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Illinois, and most of the states Cullinan owners live in, that credit is real money. On a $450,000 Cullinan traded against a $600,000 next car in a 7 percent sales-tax state, the trade credit saves the owner about $31,500 in sales tax.

That number is the honest comparison. The outright number from Exotic Auto needs to be higher than the trade number plus the tax credit the owner would lose by selling outright. On a strong Cullinan it usually is. On a tired Cullinan with miles, a reported accident, or a cosmetic file, it is closer. The appraiser says so on the first call.

A few states do not give a trade-tax credit. Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Hawaii, and a handful of others treat a trade like cash. In those states the outright sale is almost always the right call.

When trade-in is the right answer

  • The next car is at a Rolls-Royce dealer or an exotic store that will give a strong trade number, and the owner wants one transaction instead of two.
  • The owner lives in a high sales-tax state and the trade credit is a meaningful number against the next car.
  • The Cullinan has a story on the Carfax or in the file that an outright buyer will punish and a franchise dealer will absorb into their wholesale channel.
  • Timing. The next car is being delivered this week and the owner does not want to carry two cars for 30 days.

When outright is the right answer

  • The next car is a private-party purchase, a factory order with months of lead time, or a cash deal with no trade-tax benefit to collect.
  • The Cullinan is clean, under 40,000 miles, and under five years old. Exotic Auto’s outright number on these cars is well above wholesale.
  • The owner lives in a no-trade-credit state.
  • The owner is not replacing the Cullinan at all.

How Exotic Auto handles it

1. Owner sends the year, Standard or Black Badge or Series II, miles, color, and a few photos to the Rolls-Royce page or calls.

2. Exotic Auto returns one outright number built from live auction results, current private asks, and what the car retails for.

3. If the owner is weighing a trade, the appraiser can also run the trade-tax math against the owner’s state and the expected trade number, so the comparison is honest.

4. If the outright number works, the paperwork goes out, the lender is paid if there is one, the owner is paid, and an enclosed truck comes to the driveway. The owner does not trailer the car anywhere.

Most Cullinan sales close inside a week from the first message.

What Exotic Auto does not buy

Salvage or rebuilt titles. Cars with more than 40,000 miles. Cars with undisclosed accident repair. The 2010s Ghost and Wraith generation are a different market and are handled separately.

Just sold my Bentaga and the process was super easy. We spoke on phone where Hasan made a verbal offer. We went back and forth for a few minutes and agreed that if the car was in condition as described then they will be willing to meet my price.Upon arriving, of course they did they part in attempting to give a lower price but after no more than 30 mins we settled at the previously agreed price. Paperwork took less than 20 mins and was on my way. They also covered my Uber ride back home.Would definitely utilize them in the future.
